After a bit of a holiday enforced absence from these pages it is back to being an informative promoter again as we endeavour to let you know about the 3 shows we have this week!
Wednesday 17th August– Phil Cooper – Unplugged @ The Roaring Donkey
Opening the week at The Roaring Donkey for our regular Unplugged slot Jamie has turned to one of our good friends “Phabulous” Phil Cooper! Sop regular Phil is a contemporary singer/songwriter with thought provoking songwriting and energetic, often unpredictable live performances. Phil has regularly (especially from Dave) drawn comparisons to Neil Finn, Glenn Tilbrook and Ben Folds, which is a very good thing.
Having been the frontman for The Haiku for 6 years, 2012 saw him go it alone, and since he has played a host of solo shows, including highly successful support slots for Mark Morriss (The Bluetones) and Dave McPherson (InMe). During his live shows, he makes a real connection with the crowd, often starting and finishing the shows entirely unplugged and shunning the stage to stand right in among the captivated audience.
Entry is free, music from 8.30pm. Details HERE.
Thursday 18th August– Diagonal People, Cupcake Diaz & The Felt-Tip Pens, Narrowcliff + Bobby the Persuader (DJ set) – @ The Victoria
The big band show of the week is a bit of a summer party as not only do we present 3 excellent bands, we have also invited the mercurial vinyl DJ Bobby The Persuader to come along and spin some records you didn’t know you loved.
Headliners for this jaunt are Diagonal People, a multi-faceted and multi-tentacled esoteric art demon sprawling Swindon. A self prescribed “Post-Genre Fusion-Pop Earthquake-tribe Adam-and-eve self-revolving collective” of preposterous young upstarts viciously and passionately trying to alienate and seduce at once with sonic sounds for the body, brain, heart, bones and ass.
A thematic, high concept explosion of aural manipulation, make-up, costume, lighting, firework, video, history, design, technology and textural/melodic/rhythmic divine intervention. A boiling pot of undulating lineups and fluid instrumentation stretching from fire extinguishers to samplers to everything and anything in between.
With influences from all over the universe and with inspirations and ambitions beyond it, Diagonal people are desperate to give and desperate to explore, affirm and shape the things around them. Yes, they are nuts. But in a deliciously creative way.
Middle band go by the creative name of Cupcake Diaz & The Felt-Tip Pens. These guys are a band so disorganised they are not on social media yet. So we have nicked a basic description from another gig (sorry): “The evil twin of the Me!Me!Me?s, but with added Velvet Underground-inspired weirdness. Sassy.” Sounds good to us!
Openers Narrowcliff are a Foals-esque indie band with sumptuous harmonies and infectious melodies from the people who brought you Energy Without The Sun.
Weaving in and out of this musical trio is the enigmatic and mercurial DJ Bobby The Persuader playing a collection of tunes you forgot or never knew you loved. It will be a Vinyl only affair I’m afraid you won’t get any of those little cases of cds with the persuader! Previously been a resident in the Brunel Rooms in Swindon, veteran of many many gigs supporting top names and played in Shangri La for the last 5 Glastonbury Festivals.
Entry is £3, full details HERE.
Sunday 21st August – Jake Martin + Jack Moore – The Renegade Sessions @ Baila Coffee & Vinyl
Closing the week we have a Sunday afternoon session at Baila. Headliner Jake Martin is an energetic and charismatic folk punk singer/songwriter. Jake intelligently blends the art of story telling; depicting tales of life, love, and the road, with dark wit, politics, and his own cheeky brand of cider fuelled humour. Add Jake’s witty ability to captivate and animate any room of strangers, his memorable sing along anthems, and the occasional bit of furniture climbing, and the result is an electrifying “every show like it’s the last” performance.
Support comes from SoP regular and top bloke Jack Moore, who is quite simply an English musician, singer and songwriter.
