Firstly, I have to admit I am still not sure how this happened, it was so quick from inception to completion. But, not going to look a gift horse in the mouth so here we are, very, very excited to announce we have a show for none other than Nick Harper!! Not only that, it is a super exclusive, mega intimate show in Baila Coffee & Vinyl. Mad.
Nick has been one of the most consistent and successful artists in the region for some time, with a lengthy career, a stack of top selling albums and some amazing collaborations under his belt. He commenced this year with a sell-out UK Spring tour supporting his third and final vinyl ‘retrospective’ vinyl LP. He is also sporting a new live album, ‘Hark!’ – a recording of songs from his award winning shows at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2003, which he will have with him at an extended run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August. This winter Nick is on tour with a band for the first time in ten years – a band made up of our good friends Port Erin no less! This show acts as a nice warm up for these band dates.
Son of the legendary UK singer-songwriter Roy Harper, Nick was born in London and raised in Wiltshire. Having played the guitar from the age of 10 and surrounded by the likes of Keith Moon, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and Dave Gilmour as he grew up, it was no surprise when Nick made his recording debut on his father’s Whatever Happened to Jugula? in 1985.
To call Nick a superlative singer/songwriter could put his highly lauded guitar talent in the shade, and to call him a guitarist’s guitarist might slight his distinctive, soulful voice and passionate songs. Not forgetting the wild ride that is one of his live shows – from personal introspection to biting political satire via a charmingly caustic wit that would make Groucho Marx proud. He often segues from his own compositions to well-loved covers he makes his own – he takes on Presley, Zappa, Jeff Buckley, Led Zeppelin, Monty Python and Public Enemy (yes, on an acoustic guitar). He also has the alarming ability to break guitar strings almost by sheer force of will… and then change them without dropping a beat. For over a decade, he has been dazzling audiences and reviewers alike with this heady mix of virtuosity, boyish charm, showmanship and sheer bravado.
Nick devotes a lot of energy to fund raising projects in the UK and helped set-up and organise ‘Avebury Rocks’ a Love Hope Strength style walk and rock concert held near Nick’s home in Wiltshire. The event has run very successfully for four years with renowned acts such as Newton Faulkner and The Levellers headlining, raising substantial funds for The Prospect Hospice, (where Nick’s mother died) and other local good causes. 2013 saw a change in venue for the Devil’s Den Rocks, but has subsequently moved back to Avebury.
Support comes from the raw talent of new kids on the block Burbank, an acoustic duo who our Jamie rates very highly.
Tickets are priced at £12 in advance, and are available from Seetickets.com or directly from the venue. There will be 50 only, so get in quick as this show will sell out fast.
