After a Swindon Shuffle induced break from most things SoP related we are back, and back with a BANG! Our autumn schedule is shaping up to be a class season of live music. We have already announced Flight Brigade’s visit to Swindon, but we have some other belters up our sleeves still.
Next out of the traps is perhaps the biggest of all, as on November 3rd we welcome US band Avon to our humble project. Big deal, I hear you say, who the hell are Avon? Well, they are a bit of a stoner rock / desert blues supergroup featuring no lesser a luminary than former Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age drummer Alfredo Hernandez. Yes, two of the biggest alternative rock bands of the last 20 years. Not only that, he was also the sticks man in Yawning Man, perhaps the prototype Desert Rock band. Joining him are James Childs, originally from Portishead and a founder member of Airbus, a band Ed remembers seeing back in his student days, as well as playing with Vic DuMonte’s Person Non-Grata along with Charles Passarell, low end beast from pioneering band Waxy.
These guys have basically created the Desert Rock Sound (Alfredo played on much of and co-wrote a lot of Josh Hommes Desert Sessions album). Heavy, sludgy riffs, blues licks and plenty of psychedelic soundscapes and freak outs that underpin surprising melodic tunes are the h
allmarks of the band.
In support are Wiltshire’s finest proponents of the Desert Rock sound, Rewire The Time Machine are a mighty slab of blues driven stoner rock. One of our all time favourite bands to watch and hang out with. Openers are a new band from Bristol. Phoxjaw include two former members of SoP favourites Black Elephant, and mine a similarly rich vein of big riffs and psychedelic vibes.
